Geoff Smith remarked the following in the foreword to the text Infinity by Hojoo Lee, Tom Lovering, and Cosmin Pohoata.

The nations which do consistently well at this competition (IMO) must have at least one (and probably at least two) of the following attributes:

  • A large population.
  • A significant proportion of its population in receipt of a good education.
  • A well-organized training infrastructure to support mathematics competitions.
  • A culture which values intellectual achievement.

Alternatively, you need a cloning facility and a relaxed regulatory framework.

👋 IMO

International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

  • The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students. It is held annually in a different country.
  • The IMO Foundation is a charity which supports the IMO. Its vision is as follows.

It is the aim of the IMO to bring young people together from all over the world to enjoy the challenges of mathematics in a spirit of friendly competition. This provides a stimulus for Mathematics in each of the participating countries as young people strive for selection. Whist clearly it is a competitive event, for most participants, it is the people that they meet and the shared joy of discovery that is what they regard as most worthwhile. It is common that lifelong friendships are forged at IMO events.

  • The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959, with seven countries participating.
  • It has since been held annually, except in 1980.
  • Currently, it has expanded to over 100 countries across the globe.
  • Each country sends a team of up to six students.
  • In the recent past,
    • Japan was the host for IMO2023,
    • Norway was the host for IMO2022,
    • Russian Federation was the host for IMO2020, IMO2021.
  • The forthcoming IMOs have been scheduled.
    • IMO2024 will take place in UK during July, 2024.
    • IMO2025 will be held in Australia.
    • IMO2026 will be held in People’s Republic of China.
    • IMO2027 will be held in Hungary.
  • IMO is held over two consecutive days with 3 problems each. Each day, the contestants have four-and-a-half hours to solve three problems. Each problem is worth 7 points for a maximum total score of 42 points.
  • The problems are arranged so that the order in increasing difficulty is Q1, Q4, Q2, Q5, Q3 and Q6, where the Day 1 problems Q1, Q2, and Q3 are in increasing difficulty, and the Day 2 problems Q4, Q5, and Q6 are in increasing difficulty.

Participation of India in IMO

  • India has been participating in IMO since 1989, and has been a host in the year 1996.
  • India has received 16 Gold medals (G), 73 Silver medals (S), 79 Bronze medals (B), and 28 Honourable mentions (HM).

👋 APMO

Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO)

  • The Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) is a mathematical competition for countries in the Pacific-Rim Region.
  • One of its aims is

Discovering, encouraging and challenging mathematically gifted high-school students.

  • The first APMO was held in 1989, with four countries participating.
  • The APMO is held annually.
  • In 2023, 38 countries participated in APMO.
  • Some of its regulations are as follows.
    • The APMO contest consists of one four-hour paper consisting of five questions of varying difficulty and each having a maximum score of 7 points.
    • Country representatives organize the competition locally. Any number of students may sit the exam in each country, but the results of at most 10 per country can be sent for official participation.

Participation of India in APMO

  • India has been participating in APMO since 2015.
  • India has received 4 Gold medals (G), 15 Silver medals (S), 36 Bronze medals (B), and 22 Honourable mentions (HM).

👋 EGMO

European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)

  • The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)

is the premier European mathematics competition, made exclusively for high school female students who enjoy mathematics beyond the regular school curriculum. Started by the United Kingdom in April 2012, EGMO has grown since then and now includes over fifty countries, welcoming participants from beyond Europe.

  • EGMO

aims to inspire girls to take part in national and international mathematics competitions, providing more opportunities for mathematical development. It serves as a platform to amplify the presence of young female mathematicians on the global stage with the possibility to find associates and make remarkable connections while fostering cultural exchange among teenagers worldwide. It encourages young females to become scientists and boosts the number of girls in IMO teams.

  • The first EGMO was held in 2012, with 19 countries participating.
  • The EGMO is held annually.
  • In 2024, 54 countries participated in EGMO.
  • Participation in the EGMO is by invitation only. Each invited country sends a team consisting of up to four contestants.
  • In the recent past,
  • The forthcoming EGMOs have been scheduled.
  • EGMO is held over two days. Since 2013,
    • each of the two contest papers consists of three problems,
